Chapter Seven

Mac watched Megan carefully, trying to gauge her reaction to his statement. At least she hadn’t cringed in disgust when he’d pressed her hand to him.

“It’s only a problem if we make it one,” she replied, blushing.

“What are you saying?” Mac asked. The last thing they needed at this point was more confusion.

She swallowed and the knuckles of her clasped hands paled as she clenched them together tightly. “I don’t know why you’d be attracted to me in my condition.”

Her comment surprised him. Couldn’t she tell that he found her desirable? “Make no mistake, I am attracted.”

He captured her chin in his fingers. Her eyes widened. Her lips were slightly parted and tempting as hell. For an instant he debated presenting her with a list of reasons, but he discarded the idea. How could he explain what he himself didn’t fully understand? “We’re having a child together,” he said instead. “And I think it’s safe to say we get along?”

She nodded.

“So let’s see where it leads. Is that okay with you?”

She searched his face and he wondered what she saw there. He was a pretty average guy, he thought, although Justine used to say the TV camera would love him, whatever that meant. Once Megan had the baby…

A tempting image of her popped into his imagination. Don’t go there, he commanded himself.

“We have a lot to deal with right now,” she finally said. “Can we take things slow? Is that okay with you?”

Gently he laid his hand against her stomach as mingled relief and apprehension poured through him. Was he simplifying the situation between them by acknowledging his desire for her or only complicating it?

“I don’t think we have a choice,” he said with a chuckle. “Slow seems to be our only current option.”

Megan must have caught his meaning, because her blush deepened and her gaze shifted away. “I guess you’re right.”

Mac slipped his arm around her shoulders and cuddled her closer, pleased when she relaxed against him. For several minutes he enjoyed the simple pleasure of merely holding her as he wondered what she was thinking.

When she remained silent, he let her go, angling around on the couch so he could watch her face. “I called my folks this morning.” He’d caught them before they’d left the house, each listening on a separate extension once he had asked to speak to both of them.

His announcement had been met with stunned silence. As always, his first thought was that he had disappointed them yet again. Well, they’d wanted a grandchild and he was giving them one.

Recovering first, his mother had fired off a dozen questions for which Mac hadn’t yet worked out answers. In the face of her inquisition, he’d decided against giving her too many details. When he was done fending her off, he’d ended up feeling cranky and defensive.

“Did you tell them?” Megan asked, looking up.

He knew she was referring to the special circumstances of their situation. “No, I figured they’d find out soon enough. They asked when junior is due.
